In his first official act, Mayor Greg Fischer proclaimed Saturday, January 8, 2011 as a citywide “Day of Service” and he encouraged all citizens to volunteer.
Metro United Way coordinated the Day of Service activities. Individual citizens, neighborhoods groups, businesses, churches and faith-based organizations were encouraged to volunteer through United Way.
Mayor Fischer and his staff spent their Day of Service helping renovate a Habitat for Humanity house and completing a painting project at The Center for Women and Families.
